Nearby cities

There are 11 more Algeria cities here, and each has its own times rather than sharing Baba Hassen's. The list under the timetable below will take you to any of them.

The shape of the day

The day's first prayer, Fajr, falls at 5:39 am. The sun appears at 7:09 am, which ends the Fajr period. Next is Dhuhr at 12:32 pm, then Asr in the afternoon at 4:16 pm. Maghrib comes with sunset at 5:55 pm, and Isha closes the day at 7:25 pm. Around 10 hours and 46 minutes of daylight, all told.

How much the times move

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Baba Hassen. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.

Finding the qibla

The qibla from here runs east-south-east, a bearing of about 105°. Makkah is around 3,932 kilometres (2,443 miles) away in a straight line. Compass apps usually read magnetic north rather than true north, so allow a few degrees of local declination if you are setting a prayer mat precisely.

Why Dhuhr lands where it does

The sun reaches its high point roughly 32 minutes after noon here. Hence Dhuhr at 12:32 pm, with the rest of the afternoon following along behind it. It is not an error — timezones are drawn for administrative convenience, not astronomical accuracy.

Suhoor and iftar in Baba Hassen

The fasting day here runs 5:39 am to 5:55 pm: suhoor closes at the first, iftar comes at the second. Today it works out to some 12 hours and 16 minutes. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

The calculation behind them

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Where two calculations disagree it is nearly always Fajr or Isha: those depend on twilight, and twilight is a judgement call. Asr here follows the Hanafi reckoning, which places it noticeably later in the afternoon than the other schools would. Local practice wins over any website, this one included.
