Prayer Times in Almaty, Kazakhstan

Praying in Almaty

Almaty gets about 10 hours and 25 minutes of daylight today, and the five prayer times are spaced across it. Prayer times are anchored to the sun rather than the clock, so as that figure grows and shrinks across the year, every time below moves with it.

A walk through today's times

Fajr is at 4:44 am — early, and in darkness. The sun appears at 6:23 am, which ends the Fajr period. Dhuhr 11:36 am, Asr 3:06 pm — the two that carry the middle of the day. Maghrib comes with sunset at 4:48 pm, and Isha closes the day at 6:18 pm. Around 10 hours and 25 minutes of daylight, all told.

Method and madhab

The underlying method is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Where two calculations disagree it is nearly always Fajr or Isha: those depend on twilight, and twilight is a judgement call. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. Local practice wins over any website, this one included.

Lining up with the Kaaba

The qibla from here runs west-south-west, a bearing of about 247°. The distance works out to about 4,192 kilometres, or 2,605 miles. Compass apps usually read magnetic north rather than true north, so allow a few degrees of local declination if you are setting a prayer mat precisely.

If you are fasting

The fasting day here runs 4:44 am to 4:48 pm: suhoor closes at the first, iftar comes at the second. Today it works out to some 12 hours and 4 minutes. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

How much the times move

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Almaty. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.
