Prayer Times in Toronto, Canada

Toronto prayer times explained

Praying in Toronto means facing a point roughly 10,489 kilometres off, around the curve of the world. At that range the great-circle route matters: the qibla from here runs north-east, about 55°, which surprises people expecting otherwise.

Method and madhab

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Where two calculations disagree it is nearly always Fajr or Isha: those depend on twilight, and twilight is a judgement call. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. Local practice wins over any website, this one included.

For tahajjud

Between Isha at 7:41 pm and Fajr at 6:11 am there are about 10 hours and 30 minutes. If you pray tahajjud, the final third of that stretch is the one to aim for; counting backwards from Fajr is the easier way to locate it.

A walk through today's times

Fajr is at 6:11 am — early, and in darkness. The sun appears at 7:51 am, which ends the Fajr period. After the sun peaks, Dhuhr is prayed at 1:01 pm, and Asr at 4:28 pm. Maghrib comes with sunset at 6:11 pm, and Isha closes the day at 7:41 pm. Around 10 hours and 20 minutes of daylight, all told.

Fasting hours

The fasting day here runs 6:11 am to 6:11 pm: suhoor closes at the first, iftar comes at the second. Today it works out to some 12 hours. The monthly table further down shows the window widening or narrowing day by day, which helps when planning meals a week ahead.

Through the year

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Toronto. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.

A quirk of the timezone

True midday in Toronto arrives some 61 minutes after what the clock reads. It explains the 1:01 pm Dhuhr — the timezone boundary is drawn some way from this city's own meridian. It is not an error — timezones are drawn for administrative convenience, not astronomical accuracy.
