Prayer Times in Vancouver, Canada

Praying in Vancouver

The first thing to understand about the Vancouver timetable is that local clock time runs a long way off solar time. The sun reaches its highest point roughly 56 minutes after noon, which is why Dhuhr is listed at 12:56 pm.

The direction of prayer

Face north-north-east — roughly 17° on a compass — and you are pointed at the Kaaba. The distance works out to about 11,977 kilometres, or 7,442 miles.

How much the times move

There is a caveat to the summer timetable in Vancouver. For several weeks around the solstice the sun does not dip deep enough for a true Fajr or Isha, and the calculated values become estimates. Local scholarly guidance takes over in that period.

Suhoor and iftar in Vancouver

Suhoor ends at Fajr — 6:05 am today — and the fast breaks at Maghrib, 5:56 pm. Around 11 hours and 51 minutes without food or water today. Scroll to the month view to see how the length changes as Ramadan progresses.

The last third of the night

Between Isha at 7:26 pm and Fajr at 6:05 am there are about 10 hours and 39 minutes. If you pray tahajjud, the final third of that stretch is the one to aim for; counting backwards from Fajr is the easier way to locate it.

How the times are worked out

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are largely settled across methods; Fajr and Isha are where authorities part company. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. A small gap between this page and your nearest masjid is nothing to worry about; go with theirs.

Today's timetable

The first call comes at 6:05 am, for Fajr. You have until 7:56 am, when the sun comes up. Dhuhr 12:56 pm, Asr 4:09 pm — the two that carry the middle of the day. Sunset brings Maghrib at 5:56 pm; Isha is the last, at 7:26 pm. That is some 10 hours between the sun coming up and going down.
