How the times are worked out

The underlying method is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are largely settled across methods; Fajr and Isha are where authorities part company. Asr here follows the Hanafi reckoning, which places it noticeably later in the afternoon than the other schools would. A small gap between this page and your nearest masjid is nothing to worry about; go with theirs.

Antananarivo today, prayer by prayer

It starts in the dark, with Fajr at 3:52 am. By 5:11 am the sun is up and Fajr's time has passed. Dhuhr 11:34 am, Asr 4:02 pm — the two that carry the middle of the day. Sunset brings Maghrib at 5:57 pm; Isha is the last, at 7:27 pm. That is some 12 hours and 46 minutes between the sun coming up and going down.

Which way to face in Antananarivo

Face north — roughly 349° on a compass — and you are pointed at the Kaaba. The distance works out to about 4,562 kilometres, or 2,835 miles. Compass apps usually read magnetic north rather than true north, so allow a few degrees of local declination if you are setting a prayer mat precisely.

Why Dhuhr lands where it does

Solar noon in Antananarivo falls about 26 minutes before twelve o'clock. Hence Dhuhr at 11:34 am, with the rest of the afternoon following along behind it. This catches people out regularly, but prayer follows the sun, and the clock is only the label we put on it.

The yearly swing

The seasons show here without dominating. Summer in Antananarivo brings earlier Fajr times and a later Isha; winter pulls everything inward, and Maghrib can arrive while the afternoon still feels unfinished. Expect an hour or two of movement between the extremes.
