Lining up with the Kaaba

From this city the direction is west-north-west, or 283° if you prefer the number. That puts the Kaaba roughly 7,737 km — 4,807 miles — from here. Worth remembering that a phone compass points to magnetic north, which can sit several degrees off true north depending on where you are.

Through the year

Across the year the Xinpu timetable shifts by an hour or two at each end — long summer evenings push Isha back, short winter days crowd Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib together.

Ramadan timings

Suhoor closes at 4:54 am in Xinpu, with iftar at 5:12 pm. Roughly 12 hours and 18 minutes, going by today's figures. Scroll to the month view to see how the length changes as Ramadan progresses.

For tahajjud

Xinpu gets roughly 10 hours and 12 minutes of night between the last prayer and the first. For anyone praying tahajjud, the last third of that period is the part traditionally singled out — work back from Fajr rather than forward from Isha to find it.

Xinpu today, prayer by prayer

Fajr opens the day at 4:54 am, well before first light. The sun appears at 6:21 am, which ends the Fajr period. Dhuhr follows at 11:47 am once the sun has tipped past its highest point, and Asr at 3:34 pm. The sun goes down at Maghrib, 5:12 pm, and the day ends with Isha at 6:42 pm. That gives Xinpu roughly 10 hours and 51 minutes of daylight today.

A note on the method used

Calculations come from Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Methods differ mainly over Fajr and Isha, because each authority settles on a slightly different angle of the sun below the horizon — a few minutes either way is normal. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. Where your local mosque differs, follow the mosque — that is the timetable the congregation keeps.
