What changes between summer and winter

Elsfleth is far enough north that calculated Fajr and Isha times become unreliable around midsummer, when twilight lasts all night. Most communities this far up adopt a local ruling for those weeks; ask at your mosque. Outside that stretch, the ordinary calculation applies.

The shape of the day

Fajr opens the day at 5:19 am, well before first light. You have until 7:20 am, when the sun comes up. Midday brings Dhuhr at 12:10 pm; Asr comes round at 3:09 pm. The sun goes down at Maghrib, 4:58 pm, and the day ends with Isha at 6:28 pm. That gives Elsfleth roughly 9 hours and 38 minutes of daylight today.

Qibla from Elsfleth

From this city the direction is south-east, or 131° if you prefer the number. The distance works out to about 4,424 kilometres, or 2,749 miles. Compass apps usually read magnetic north rather than true north, so allow a few degrees of local declination if you are setting a prayer mat precisely.

How the times are worked out

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Methods differ mainly over Fajr and Isha, because each authority settles on a slightly different angle of the sun below the horizon — a few minutes either way is normal. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. Where your local mosque differs, follow the mosque — that is the timetable the congregation keeps.
