Prayer times in Armação dos Búzios

Praying in Armação dos Búzios means facing a point roughly 10,118 kilometres off, around the curve of the world. At that range the great-circle route matters: the qibla from here runs east-north-east, about 67°, which surprises people expecting otherwise.

The calculation behind them

Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah is the standard applied to this page. The disagreement between methods lives almost entirely in Fajr and Isha, where the sun is below the horizon and the chosen angle decides the time. Asr is Hanafi on this page, so expect it later than a Shafi timetable would show. If the mosque down the road announces something a few minutes different, pray with the mosque.

If you are fasting

Stop eating by 3:43 am; break the fast at 5:58 pm. That is about 14 hours and 15 minutes on today's times. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

A quirk of the timezone

True midday in Armação dos Búzios arrives some 29 minutes before what the clock reads. Hence Dhuhr at 11:31 am, with the rest of the afternoon following along behind it. This catches people out regularly, but prayer follows the sun, and the clock is only the label we put on it.

How the day runs in Armação dos Búzios
