Prayer Times in Salvador, Brazil

What these times mean for Salvador

There are around 12 hours and 33 minutes between sunrise and sunset in Salvador today. None of the five are fixed to the clock — they follow the sun, and the sun keeps different hours in every month.

A walk through today's times

The day's first prayer, Fajr, falls at 3:45 am. Sunrise at 5:01 am closes that window. Dhuhr 11:18 am, Asr 3:40 pm — the two that carry the middle of the day. Maghrib comes with sunset at 5:34 pm, and Isha closes the day at 7:04 pm. Around 12 hours and 33 minutes of daylight, all told.

How the times are worked out

These times follow Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Where two calculations disagree it is nearly always Fajr or Isha: those depend on twilight, and twilight is a judgement call. Asr is Hanafi on this page, so expect it later than a Shafi timetable would show. Local practice wins over any website, this one included.

Fasting hours

The fasting day here runs 3:45 am to 5:34 pm: suhoor closes at the first, iftar comes at the second. Today it works out to some 13 hours and 49 minutes. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

How much the times move

Near the equator the timetable is remarkably stable. Salvador sees close to twelve hours of daylight in every month, so Fajr and Maghrib move by minutes rather than hours across the year.

Why Dhuhr lands where it does

True midday in Salvador arrives some 42 minutes before what the clock reads. That is why Dhuhr sits at 11:18 am rather than just past midday, and it carries through to Asr, Maghrib and Isha as well. Nothing is wrong with the calculation; timezones are political lines, and the sun does not consult them.

Which way to face in Salvador

The qibla from here runs east-north-east, a bearing of about 66°. The distance works out to about 9,359 kilometres, or 5,815 miles. Compass apps usually read magnetic north rather than true north, so allow a few degrees of local declination if you are setting a prayer mat precisely.
