Prayer Times in Bronx, United States

Praying in Bronx

There are around 10,288 kilometres (6,393 miles) between Bronx and Makkah. The bearing works out to roughly 59°, or east-north-east — a great-circle direction, not the one you would draw on a flat map.

Clock time and solar time

True midday in Bronx arrives some 39 minutes after what the clock reads. It explains the 12:39 pm Dhuhr — the timezone boundary is drawn some way from this city's own meridian. Nothing is wrong with the calculation; timezones are political lines, and the sun does not consult them.

The calculation behind them

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Where two calculations disagree it is nearly always Fajr or Isha: those depend on twilight, and twilight is a judgement call. Asr is Hanafi on this page, so expect it later than a Shafi timetable would show. Local practice wins over any website, this one included.

If you are fasting

The fasting day here runs 5:47 am to 5:55 pm: suhoor closes at the first, iftar comes at the second. Today it works out to some 12 hours and 8 minutes. Scroll to the month view to see how the length changes as Ramadan progresses.

From Fajr to Isha

The day's first prayer, Fajr, falls at 5:47 am. Sunrise at 7:23 am closes that window. Midday brings Dhuhr at 12:39 pm; Asr comes round at 4:14 pm. Maghrib comes with sunset at 5:55 pm, and Isha closes the day at 7:25 pm. Around 10 hours and 32 minutes of daylight, all told.

Through the year

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Bronx. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.

The last third of the night

Between Isha at 7:25 pm and Fajr at 5:47 am there are about 10 hours and 22 minutes. The final third of the night carries particular weight in the tradition, and it is measured from Isha to Fajr rather than by the clock.
