Prayer Times in Hampstead, United States

The prayer day in Hampstead

The direction of prayer from Hampstead is east-north-east, or 60° if you are using a compass app. That is roughly 9,981 kilometres in a straight line. The times themselves are worked out from the city's exact position.

Method and madhab

Calculations come from Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are largely settled across methods; Fajr and Isha are where authorities part company. Asr here follows the Hanafi reckoning, which places it noticeably later in the afternoon than the other schools would. A small gap between this page and your nearest masjid is nothing to worry about; go with theirs.

For tahajjud

Between Isha at 7:08 pm and Fajr at 5:39 am there are about 10 hours and 31 minutes. For anyone praying tahajjud, the last third of that period is the part traditionally singled out — work back from Fajr rather than forward from Isha to find it.

Today's timetable

The first call comes at 5:39 am, for Fajr. Sunrise at 7:18 am closes that window. Next is Dhuhr at 12:28 pm, then Asr in the afternoon at 3:56 pm. Sunset brings Maghrib at 5:38 pm; Isha is the last, at 7:08 pm. That is some 10 hours and 20 minutes between the sun coming up and going down.

If you are fasting

Suhoor ends at Fajr — 5:39 am today — and the fast breaks at Maghrib, 5:38 pm. Around 11 hours and 59 minutes without food or water today. Scroll to the month view to see how the length changes as Ramadan progresses.

The yearly swing

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Hampstead. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.

A quirk of the timezone

True midday in Hampstead arrives some 28 minutes after what the clock reads. Hence Dhuhr at 12:28 pm, with the rest of the afternoon following along behind it. This catches people out regularly, but prayer follows the sun, and the clock is only the label we put on it.
