Prayer Times in Los Angeles, United States

Los Angeles prayer times explained

Today runs to roughly 10 hours and 52 minutes of daylight in Los Angeles, from sunrise at 7:11 am to sunset at 6:03 pm. None of the five are fixed to the clock — they follow the sun, and the sun keeps different hours in every month.

How the day runs in Los Angeles

It starts in the dark, with Fajr at 5:44 am. The window stays open until sunrise, 7:11 am. Midday brings Dhuhr at 12:37 pm; Asr comes round at 4:25 pm. Sunset brings Maghrib at 6:03 pm; Isha is the last, at 7:33 pm. That is some 10 hours and 52 minutes between the sun coming up and going down.

The night in between

Between Isha at 7:33 pm and Fajr at 5:44 am there are about 10 hours and 11 minutes. The final third of the night carries particular weight in the tradition, and it is measured from Isha to Fajr rather than by the clock.

Where these times come from

The calculation used here is Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are largely settled across methods; Fajr and Isha are where authorities part company. Asr here follows the Hanafi reckoning, which places it noticeably later in the afternoon than the other schools would. A small gap between this page and your nearest masjid is nothing to worry about; go with theirs.

Qibla from Los Angeles

Face north-north-east — roughly 24° on a compass — and you are pointed at the Kaaba. That puts the Kaaba roughly 13,424 km — 8,341 miles — from here. If you are marking a permanent direction in a room, check true north rather than trusting a phone compass alone.

What changes between summer and winter

Across the year the Los Angeles timetable shifts by an hour or two at each end — long summer evenings push Isha back, short winter days crowd Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib together.

The fasting day in Los Angeles

Suhoor ends at Fajr — 5:44 am today — and the fast breaks at Maghrib, 6:03 pm. Around 12 hours and 19 minutes without food or water today. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

Why Dhuhr lands where it does

Solar noon in Los Angeles falls about 37 minutes after twelve o'clock. That is why Dhuhr sits at 12:37 pm rather than just past midday, and it carries through to Asr, Maghrib and Isha as well. Nothing is wrong with the calculation; timezones are political lines, and the sun does not consult them.
