Prayer Times in Philadelphia, United States

Prayer times in Philadelphia

Philadelphia prays Fajr at 5:53 am today, with Maghrib at 6:00 pm and Isha at 7:30 pm. They are not fixed — the sun moves them a little every day, and the page keeps up on its own.

Today's timetable

It starts in the dark, with Fajr at 5:53 am. By 7:27 am the sun is up and Fajr's time has passed. Dhuhr follows at 12:44 pm once the sun has tipped past its highest point, and Asr at 4:20 pm. Sunset brings Maghrib at 6:00 pm; Isha is the last, at 7:30 pm. That is some 10 hours and 33 minutes between the sun coming up and going down.

Through the year

Summer and winter look like different timetables entirely in Philadelphia. The times can shift by several hours between the two ends of the year.

The night in between

From Isha to Fajr is around 10 hours and 23 minutes at the moment. If you pray tahajjud, the final third of that stretch is the one to aim for; counting backwards from Fajr is the easier way to locate it.

Suhoor and iftar in Philadelphia

Suhoor ends at Fajr — 5:53 am today — and the fast breaks at Maghrib, 6:00 pm. Around 12 hours and 7 minutes without food or water today. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

Why Dhuhr lands where it does

The sun reaches its high point roughly 44 minutes after noon here. It explains the 12:44 pm Dhuhr — the timezone boundary is drawn some way from this city's own meridian. Nothing is wrong with the calculation; timezones are political lines, and the sun does not consult them.

The calculation behind them

Calculations come from Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah. Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are largely settled across methods; Fajr and Isha are where authorities part company. Asr is Hanafi on this page, so expect it later than a Shafi timetable would show. A small gap between this page and your nearest masjid is nothing to worry about; go with theirs.

Lining up with the Kaaba

Face east-north-east — roughly 58° on a compass — and you are pointed at the Kaaba. Makkah is around 10,429 kilometres (6,480 miles) away in a straight line. Worth remembering that a phone compass points to magnetic north, which can sit several degrees off true north depending on where you are.
