Prayer Times in San Diego, United States

San Diego prayer times explained

Sunrise 7:04 am, sunset 6:00 pm — about 10 hours and 56 minutes of daylight in San Diego today. Prayer times are anchored to the sun rather than the clock, so as that figure grows and shrinks across the year, every time below moves with it.

How the day runs in San Diego

Everything begins with Fajr, 5:38 am today. You have until 7:04 am, when the sun comes up. Midday brings Dhuhr at 12:32 pm; Asr comes round at 4:22 pm. Maghrib is prayed at 6:00 pm as the light goes, then Isha at 7:30 pm. Sunrise to sunset, today runs about 10 hours and 56 minutes.

Season by season in San Diego

San Diego sits far enough from the equator for the difference to be felt. Midsummer stretches the day, midwinter compresses it, and the prayer times follow.

The last third of the night

Between Isha at 7:30 pm and Fajr at 5:38 am there are about 10 hours and 8 minutes. If you pray tahajjud, the final third of that stretch is the one to aim for; counting backwards from Fajr is the easier way to locate it.

A note on the method used

Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah is the standard applied to this page. The disagreement between methods lives almost entirely in Fajr and Isha, where the sun is below the horizon and the chosen angle decides the time. For Asr this page uses the Hanafi position — later in the day than the majority view. If the mosque down the road announces something a few minutes different, pray with the mosque.

Clock time and solar time

True midday in San Diego arrives some 32 minutes after what the clock reads. It explains the 12:32 pm Dhuhr — the timezone boundary is drawn some way from this city's own meridian. This catches people out regularly, but prayer follows the sun, and the clock is only the label we put on it.

If you are fasting

Stop eating by 5:38 am; break the fast at 6:00 pm. That is about 12 hours and 22 minutes on today's times. The full month is listed below if you want to see where the fast is heading.

Lining up with the Kaaba

Turn north-north-east, about 25°, for the qibla. Makkah is around 13,505 kilometres (8,391 miles) away in a straight line.
